Pitching Matchups to Watch for the Week of May 21st

Print Friendly

Bud Norris, SP, Houston Astros

Felipe Paulino @ NYY(5/21) & @ BAL (5/27) – Cover up the name and the matchups for a moment. Here’s the highlight reel: 1.93 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 10.13 K/9, 4.2 K/BB, 43% GB% and for bonus points a HR/FB% well south of 10% over the past three seasons. If you have a weak stomach take a pass, you have some grapes and/or are desperate then Paulino is a useful start in virtually any format.

Bud Norris v CHC (5/21) & @ LAD (5/27) – Don’t look now but Norris has a 4 to 1 K/BB rate over his past six starts. This could be the final step toward acedom in progress. These matchups aren’t anything to worry about either. Start Bud Norris everywhere this week!

Hector Noesi v TEX (5/22) & v LAA (5/27) – I like Noesi better than most, maybe all.  Noesi has a lot to like. He mixes four pitches including a big boy 92-93 mph fastball, has displayed elite control throughout the minors and has a great home ballpark. He could be very good one day. In the meantime his two home starts make him a no-brainer in “only” formats and a sneaky play in 15-team or deeper leagues.  I know, I know we’re all terrified of Texas but I’m a sucker for Safeco.

James McDonald v NYM (5/22) – McDonald has been killing it lately. He’s always had some Ks but the walks are way down. Even if by chance he goes out and gets hammered he still might be a lock for 7 Ks. He’s a start in all formats until further notice.

Juan Nicasio @ MIA (5/22) – A little more control and Nicasio would be automatic. As it is he is fine in Miami as long as it keeps playing like Petco-East. Start in 12-team or deeper formats.

Matt Moore v TOR (5/22) – Thus far you over-hyping rookie whorin’ tools have gotten your comeuppance with Matt Moore. At the moment he’s only worth starting in really sweet matchups and Toronto makes me feel ill at ease. An AL-only start for the moment.

Matt Harrison @ SEA (5/22) – Harrison has been shaky lately but don’t sweat it, he’s at Seattle. Start with confidence in 12-leagues or greater.

Andy Pettitte v KC (5/23) – Odds are some goofball Yankee fan picked up Pettitte and will start him based solely on Yankee Pride. Please don’t be that stupid. Bench everywhere until we have a larger sample. For the record I believe said ‘larger sample’ will be the final death nail in his career.

Scott Diamond @ CHW (5/23) – Diamond’s 6 to 1 K/BB rate and 64% GB% are seemingly unsustainable but even with a little regression it’s an incredibly effective skill set. Ride the streak and pray he keeps it up. He looks like a good bet in 12-team and deeper formats.

Joe Blanton @ STL (5/24) – With the exception of cushy matchups when I start him, Blanton has had a great season. He’s a nice spot start in 10-team leagues and probably a must start in 12-team or deeper formats.

Ryan Dempster @ PIT (5/25) – Easy math. Dempster has been great and the Pirates can’t hit. Start in all formats.

Drew Smyly @ MIN (5/25) – Smyly has displayed great control and a solid walk rate. We’ll take his 4 to 1 K/BB rate to Target Field any day of the week. Start in all formats.

Mike Minor v WAS (5/26) – When the light bulb goes off Minor will be a stud. However, for the moment he’s a punching bag. Stash in deep leagues and keeper formats but think you even consider benching him in NL-only formats.
