Mike Leake @ PHL (8/20) & v STL (8/25) – Leake’s been on a nice roll lately and is sporting a nifty 3/1 K/BB rate. The matchups are pretty good so he’s worth a start in 12-team or deeper formats.
Alex White @ NYM (8/20) & @ CHC (8/25) – White has shaky control, questionable mental makeup and a horrid home ballpark. One of these three is neutralized this week. This is also proof that I’d start anyone against the Cubs. Give him a try in NL-only leagues and hope for the best.
Will Smith @ TB (8/20) & @ BOS (8/25) – These matchups could be better but Smith has been effective enough lately to take the chance. He has a 3/1 K/BB rate and 45% GB rate so there are some legit skills here. Yes in 15-team or deeper leagues and maybe if you’re in something shallower and need to force the issue.
Chris Tillman @ TEX (8/21) & v TOR (8/26) – Tillman screws me every year so let’s give him another opportunity in 2012. He’s been sporadic and these matchups are brutal. Not the strongest case. The reason Tillman is worth a second look is that his fastball is topping out at an all time high of 93 mph. If he can sustain that he could emerge as a really good pitcher. Start in 15-team or deeper formats.
Dan Straily v MIN (8/21) & @ TB (8/26) – He was a big fat nobody coming into the year but he blew through two levels of the minors. He mixes four pitches for strikes so he may stick around. Start in 12-team leagues if you’re feeling lucky.
Hisashi Iwakuma v CLE (8/22) – We love Seattle pitchers at home and Iwakuma owns a 2.53 ERA at Safeco. Cleveland can’t hit so this makes for a good matchup in 12-team or deeper leagues.
J.A. Happ @ DET (8/23) – He’s better than you think and has 17 Ks against 2 BB since moving back into the rotation. He’s a really nice starter in 15-team leagues and maybe 12-teamers if you need Ks.
Drew Pomeranz @ CHC (8/24) – He’s due, but you’re not buying that. The Cubs suck, you know that. This is a great start for NL-only leagues.
