Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots TE

I’ve received a lot of questions concerning the tight end position over the last few weeks. The most discussed was whether or not I thought a tight end should be selected in the first round. My initial answer back was,”depending on your league scoring system.”  There are so many different scoring systems out there that it really does depend on how many points you get for a tight end reception. If it’s a standard league with normal scoring, then no. But, if you are getting 1.5 points per reception then hell yeah you do.

Let’s break that down a little more. Using 2011 numbers, if you had drafted New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski, you would have finished the season with 250 total fantasy football points. On the other hand, if you would have went with the number one wide receiver, the Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson, you would have scored 257 fantasy football points. The question for you though is which player would you rather have?  For me, I’d roll with the tight end because of the difference between the top tiers being so great. The difference between Gronkowski and the #10 tight end is 131 pts.  For Johnson the separation is only 95 pts.

Time for you to make up your own mind…
