Closer Identifier Algorithm Results For July 22

It was a bad week for CIA as it missed on Oliver Perez and Heath Bell. There was only one status change this week; the first time all year there have been so few.

Pitcher CIA Result Comments
Jim Johnson Hold 7 losses and 6 BS is a lot for anyone
Koji Uehara Hold Andrew Bailey is gone for good, so the job is Uehara’s to run with, finally. He is good enough to earn “auto hold” status, so just do it already, Koji.
Addison Reed Hold Had a rough June but has been better in July. Not close to the top tier yet.
Chris Perez Auto Hold He has let up only one run since his return. You do not get much better than that.
Joaquin Benoit Auto Hold That the Tigers are looking at other closers annoys the hell out of me.
Jose Veras Auto Hold If only he had a better team.
Greg Holland Auto Hold You can make a very good argument for Holland as real baseball’s best closer.
Ernesto Frieri Auto Hold You could not have asked for more from a bottom-tier closer on Draft Day. He has one BS since April.
Glen Perkins Auto Hold He is probably the second- or third-best closer in terms of skills.
Mariano Rivera Auto Hold A .337 BABIP is making his hit totals look high.
Grant Balfour Auto Hold Rapidly moving up the closer ranks towards the A-list, and still perfect in SV/SVO
Tom Wilhelmsen Auto Hold It’s been a strange year. He has been perfect in converting saves since he got the job back. But hasn’t really pitched much better, if at all, and skills still are terrible.
Oliver Perez Hold It is safe to say he has lost his share of the job.
Fernando Rodney Auto Hold His skill set is still weak, but he has been on a big roll in converting saves.
Joe Nathan Auto Hold Is he the best closer for roto, as some analysts think? From a consistency standpoint he might be.
Casey Janssen Auto Hold It has been a good year for Janssen, but he has taken a step back from last year.
National League
Heath Bell Hold Like Oliver Perez, Bell is apparently out.
Brad Ziegler Auto Hold Has been doing a fine job as JJ Putz’ replacement. Whether it is enough to keep him in the role remains to be seen.
David Hernandez Auto Lose He got a save on July 12 and then took a week off. It is probably safe to say he has been usurped by Ziegler, but we will wait one more week.
Craig Kimbrel Auto Hold Hard to argue with anyone who thinks he is the best closer.
Kevin Gregg Hold Just misses “auto hold” status, but barely makes “hold” status with a 2.50 K/BB.
Aroldis Chapman Auto Hold His BB regression keeps him from the top three closers.
Rafael Betancourt Auto Hold Back to the DL after an appendicitis attack.
Kenley Jansen Hold Last week I wrote that even Don Mattingly cannot screw this up. And this week they are rumored to be after K-Rod. So, Donnie Baseball gets another chance to prove his stupidity should that rumor come true.
Steve Cishek Auto Hold Like a dormant volcano that woke up, Cishek has been on fire since he got the job back, and has earned a tidy profit from Draft Day.
Francisco Rodriguez Auto Hold I have been all over Dale Sveum for his handling of this situation. And now K-Rod may bring back something of value in a deal. So, I was wrong, and have to give them credit.
Bobby Parnell Auto Hold He has only one BS since April.
Jonathan Papelbon Auto Lose Keeps his “auto lose” status after blowing his last attempt. Other CIA criteria are fine though.
Jason Grilli Auto Hold Had a small blip over the last two weeks, for him that is. Still the best.
Huston Street Auto Hold His name has been popping up in trade rumors, so apparently there is a market for closers with K rates below 6.0. Who knew?
Sergio Romo Auto Hold Just as we expected, he regained top status.
Edward Mujica Auto Hold The K/BB Watch is at 17.50.
Rafael Soriano Auto Hold Maintains his top status, despite letting up an annoying number of runs, and seeing his K rate dip below CIA minimums.
