Here are this week’s Closer Identifier Algorithm results:

Pitcher CIA Result Comments
Zach Britton Lose He was close to “hold” until his last outing when Beltran took him deep.
Ernesto Frieri Auto Lose After his last BS he did not get the next SVO, so he may be done but we will hold off for another week.
Joe Smith TBD He is reportedly in the mix, but has no SVO in June, so we include him for reference and will revisit next week.
Kevin Jepsen Auto Lose Jepsen has two SVO since Frieri’s struggles resurfaced, and he has blown them both.
Chad Qualls Hold He is 8 for his last ten so he is close to “auto hold” status.
Cody Allen Hold He has been doing just fine, in a Chad Qualls-ish sense.
Fernando Rodney Auto Hold It has been a very nice comeback season, and he has been fantastic in May and June.
Joakim Soria Auto Hold 15/16 in SV/SVO with an 11.33 K/BB.
Grant Balfour Auto Lose He may finally be out, as he has not had a SVO since June 11, but we will give it another week.
Jake McGee Auto Lose He has two SVO since Balfour’s last one, and is 1/2. The jury is still out.
Rays Committee TBD It looks like the Rays are going with a legitimate committee, so for CIA purposes we need more data on Oviedo and Peralta, both of whom have gotten SVO. Our guess is that Balfour is done, but it is not official yet.
Koji Uehara Auto Hold His only flaw is his team.
Greg Holland Auto Hold 21/22 in SV/SVO.
Joe Nathan Auto Lose Still hanging on by his fingernails and after three good outing he, of course, let up a run in his last outing.
Glen Perkins Auto Lose This is likely a fluke as he let up 4 unearned runs on June 8, and then three more in the last week. Consider the antenna up.
Ronald Belisario Lose After a rocky start he has converted four straight. But his skills are still well below CIA minimums, so if he is getting to “hold” it is going to be by converting saves.
David Robertson Auto Hold We all knew he would eventually get back to “auto hold” status, but like many others it can take a week or two to get back from a disaster as far as CIA is concerned.
Casey Janssen Auto Hold He is doing exactly what Edward Mujica did last year.
Sean Doolittle Hold The Doolittle K/BB Watch is up to 50 (!)
National League
Craig Kimbrel Auto Hold 2012 is a long time ago and we will not see a season like that again (he K’d over half the batter he faced) but he is still among the top tier.
Francisco Rodriguez Auto Hold He is back after a bad run a few weeks ago.
Trevor Rosenthal Auto Hold Has let up one lonely run in his last 16 appearances.
Hector Rondon Hold Is 8/10 in SV/SVO since getting the job with a 3.78 K/BB.
Addison Reed Auto Hold He may be giving up chewing tobacco, and we will see if it affects him. His skill set is far stronger than his ERA indicates.
Kenley Jansen Auto Hold His 4.26 ERA is belied by all of his expected metrics, which show he has pitched 2.5 runs better. Whatever is going on is a) bad luck and b) not affecting his conversion rate.
Sergio Romo Auto Lose We have seen this overwork story in a few instances this year, and it can take a while to get back (K-Rod, Rosenthal). I think he will be fine but the leash may be short.
Steve Cishek Auto Hold He is 17/18 in SV/SVO.
Jenrry Mejia Auto Lose After letting up a run on June 18 he again dropped to “auto lose” status, which he has basically had since June 5 with the exception of last week. Terry Collins now says they are a committee, and in Mejia’s next outing he pitched in a non-save situation.
Jeurys Familia TBD He is allegedly part of the committee so we include him. If we gave him a rating it would be “auto lose”.
Rafael Soriano Auto Hold He has converted 10 of his last 11 and has let up a run in 2 of his last 17 appearances.
Huston Street Auto Hold The Perfection Leader at 20.
Jonathan Papelbon Auto Hold He finally let up another run but just keep converting saves. You can do a lot worse.
Jason Grilli Auto Hold Lost his job again, probably for the last time.
Mark Melancon Auto Hold Despite letting up a run he has converted his first two SVO since regaining the job. The Pirates should have learned a lesson here, but I doubt they have.
Latroy Hawkins Auto Hold His amazing Dan Kolb-like season continues.
Aroldis Chapman Auto Hold K rate is up to 18.45.
